You can tell a lot
about a person by their actions. In this case, you can tell a lot about an
island by its activities and
Sugar Ridge Antigua is right in the middle of it all.
Each year, yachts folk from around the globe converge on Antigua for the biggest
yacht race in the Caribbean.
Antigua
Sailing Week, the granddaddy of them all, is considered by many sailing
aficionados to be one of the
top five
regattas in the world and when you see it up close it's hard to disagree. This
year, the 43rd Antigua Sailing Week commences with
Race 1 on April 24th and ends on Friday
April 30th.
At
Sea
Over the years,
Sailing Week has evolved from a regatta for local yachtsmen to an
international event
that spans
five days
(and more if you include the pre-event activities). It attracts an average of
200 yachts,
over
1500 participants,
5000
spectators
and some of the biggest, fastest and most impressive sailing yachts in the world
packed with Olympic, America's Cup and round the world sailors.
Sailing Week is the sailing equivalent of holding a tennis grand slam in the
Caribbean where, but in this case, nearly anyone can
compete against the stars! The race series takes
participants from historic Nelson's Dockyard to Dickenson Bay and back. Sailing
in the sheltered waters of the Caribbean and the big rollers of the Atlantic,
Sailing Week should be on every sailor's "must-do" list.

Highlights From Last Year's Race
On
Land
Antigua, a lively
place at any time of year, really kicks into gear during sailing week. Even if
your clients
aren't on a boat, they can join in the revelry. I have fond personal memories of
soaking in the Caribbean sun at a sand beach post-party while enjoying an icy
cold beverage and a grilled lobster! Ah, my mouth waters even now. You see,
once the daily races are finished and the sails are furled, its time to play
hard on land. The Antiguan beaches are assaulted by swarms of rubber inflatable
dinghies loaded with crews ready to unwind from the pressure of the race. Your
clients can check-out the list of social events at
the race's official website.
